Ivo Perelman & Matthew Shipp Duo at Bimhuis
Saxophonist Ivo Perelman and pianist Matthew Shipp from New York are known for their expressive free improvisations. ‘Art at the highest level’ (Something Else).
Ivo Perelman always goes all-in when he performs on tenor saxophone. The Brazilian born saxophonist moved to New York in the early 1990s to dedicate himself to free improvisation, in collaboration with visionary musicians such as William Parker and Joe Morris. Perelman has been praised for his intense and simultaneously colorful and lyrical playing.
Matthew Shipp places himself in a lineage he calls ‘black mystery school pianists’, which originated with Thelonious Monk and includes Andrew Hill and Sun Ra. His playing is rooted in jazz, blues and gospel, but he extends musical boundaries through improvisation. Previously he has collaborated with jazz adventurers such as David S. Ware and Roscoe Mitchell.
