Both these Indian musicians were recognized as masters at a very young age, Purbayan Chatterjee on sitar and Shashank Subramanyam on bansuri, the ancient bamboo flute. Both are renowned for their innovative techniques and their projects mixing Indian music with other traditions. Purbayan has previously collaborated with tabla player Zakir Hussain. Shashank played on the Grammy-nominated album Floating Point by John McLaughlin and has collaborated with, among others, Paco de Lucia, Terry Riley and V.M. Bhatt.

Purbayan and Shashank have previously recorded the album Rasayana, which translates as ‘chemistry’, on which they combine the two main directions in Indian music: the North Indian, Hindustani tradition and the South-Indian, Carnatic tradition. Rasayana was hailed as one of the albums of the year by leading magazine Songlines. At the Bimhuis they will perform with two percussionists: Parupali Phalgun on mridangam and Satyajit Talwalkar on tabla.
