Paul Dijkman, Iman Spaargaren and Michael Stratz form the illustrious jazztrio Hakketoonen (hakketoonen.com). The three gentlemen met each other at the jazzscene of Amsterdam and started to play together in different projects. Since they liked each others playing and are true aficionados of the trio format, they experienced an immediate sense of inspiration and a strong creative flow while working together. They decided to capture this creative energy on record. Dijkman, Spaargaren and Stratz work on all sorts of musical material: originals, jams, grooves, standards. Guitarist Paul Dijkman has a broad interest in different kind of musics. This is heared and seen clearly in his playing and collaboration with other ensembles such as world music ensemble Dyakti and Rover Quartet (with trumpet player Dirk Beets, bass player Andreas Metzler and drummer Franc Auf dem Brinke). Paul writes intriguing and beautiful compositions on a regular base.
Iman Spaargaren is a multi-reed player, arranger and composer (www.imanspaargaren.nl). Iman has a distinctive way of playing and a very personal tone on his horn. During the past few years Iman has been playing with a wide variety of music groups such as Iman Spaargaren Undercurrent (with Guillermo Celano, Franz von Chossy, Cord Heineking, Jasper van Hulten), Iman Spaargaren Quartet & Septet (with Marzio Scholten), European Union Quartet and Thelonious4. He released several albums and toured in the Netherlands with the Young VIP Tour 2012, in Europe and in the USA.
"Iman Spaargaren: a busy man, not deprived of outstanding musical qualities, as an instrumentalist as well as a composer" (Jacques Los, Draaiomjeoren, 2013).
"Spaargaren excels in strong melodies and lyricism. Playing fast doesn't win of formlessness, even fast runs reveal their melodical format. Besides that much more freedom is to be heared compared to earlier works" (Jan Jasper Tamboer, Jazzenzo, 2013).
Double bass and electric bass player Michael Stratz played with a wide variety of musicians throughout the last years: Francesco Bearzatti, Frank Lacey, Saoul Rubin, Sylvia OBrien, Karsu Doenmez, Ramon Valle, Libia Hernandez, Roland Snijders, Raphael Vanoli, Saskia Laroo, Rajae el Mouhandiz, Postmen and many others. Michael has been playing all over Europe and has had television appearance in Holland and the UK (BBC and Channel Four).
