About
The American songstress Gretchen Parlato was one of the great discoveries of North Sea Jazz 2010. Parlato was forced to improvise because she lost her luggage at the airport, but still she managed to impress the audience and was rewarded with a standing ovation. Meanwhile, her reputation has increased considerably and Parlato is considered as one of the most important new singers in the jazz circuit.
Her last album 'The Lost And Found' is mentioned on the list of best jazz albums of 2011, On this beautiful album, Parlato sings her own songs and pieces of Wayne Shorter, Lauryn Hill and Simply Red. Shorter calls her unique and is a fan, just like Jamie Cullum. Herbie Hancock praises her intense, magical connection with music.
The singer herself, the daughter of Frank Zappa's bassist David Parlato, claims she isn't a purist but that she's also influenced by Brazilian and African Music.
